The master thesis is a substantial individual project that can also be realized in (collaboration with) a private company, in Belgium or abroad. We generally consider that it amounts to 4 months of full time work. The subject must be proposed or approved by an advisor who must be an academic member or a permanent researcher. For geological engineers, it includes, in most of the cases, an experimental part in situ or/and in lab and an interpretation, computation, modelling part.
The goal of the master thesis is to prepare the student to his/her future career. The student will have to prove that (s)he can carry out a substantial project based on theoretical and practical knowledge and skills acquired during his/her studies. This project will almost always include a preliminary study, a research or substantial development, and a final evaluation of the results.
The master thesis counts for 20 to 25 credits. It is a large-scale personal project (roughly a hundred pages for the body of main text, without counting appendices). This project demands autonomy from the student for the creativity and development of new knowledge.
The master thesis is most often carried out within the research units of the Faculty, but may also be in a research center, a company, or abroad.
The student is supervised by a promoter. The master thesis and the oral presentation are evaluated by a jury made up of a minimum of four members of whom the promoter, who followed the student throughout his work, and an member from the business world are a part of.
