Why "Urban and Environmental Engineering" as a specific orientation

In 2050, 75% of the world population will live in cities. This shift towards a more urbanized world triggers unprecedented challenges, particularly as regards the interplay between the new urban systems and their environment. Shifts in paradigms will be needed regarding land and soil management, spatial planning, mobility, construction, water supply and sanitation, energy efficiency, as well as material use, re-use and recycling. Innovative risk management approaches also need to be developed to promote truly adaptive and resilient cities. Urbanization results also in unique opportunities, such as urban mining and innovative synergies between multiple human and economic activities.

 

The engineers' work consists in anticipating how the buildings and infrastructures that will be necessary for the city-dweller of tomorrow and that will improve their living environment. This conception requires fundamentally adapting the profession towards an integrative function, based on monitoring, modelling, but also through a more in-depth knowledge of the city's specific human environment.

 

What we offer

From September 2017, the "construction, architecture and geology" sections offer a common specific orientation in the "Urban and Environmental Engineering" sector, more specifically oriented towards two axes: "resource efficiency" and "risk management", in collaboration with the Architecture Faculty.

 

Each course includes at least 1 seminar in which 1 or more external speakers take part, and is is under the responsibility of at least two tenure holders coming from complementary disciplines. The internship and the thesis are done in a sector of urban engineering.

 

The integrated project is based on a real-world urban engineering challenge and developed in close collaboration with local stakeholders.
